What Are BJJ Shorts?
BJJ shorts are athletic shorts designed for Brazilian jiu jitsu training without the gi. They differ from regular gym shorts in four specific ways:
- No pockets — pockets catch fingers and toes during scrambles, which is how fingers get broken
- No zips or metal — banned in most competition rulesets and dangerous on the mat
- Internal or flat drawstring — an external tie becomes a handle for your opponent
- A stretch gusset — allows a full penetration step and deep guard positions
If your shorts have pockets, you are wearing gym shorts on a jiu jitsu mat. Most academies will ask you to change.
BJJ Shorts vs Fight Shorts vs Board Shorts
These three get confused constantly. Here is the actual difference:
| Feature | BJJ / Grappling Shorts | MMA Fight Shorts | Board Shorts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Built for | No-gi grappling, ground work | Striking + grappling | Water, casual |
| Fit | Close, no grabbable fabric | Looser through the leg for kicks | Loose |
| Closure | Flat or internal drawstring | Velcro or drawstring | External tie |
| Pockets | None | None | Yes |
| Legal for no-gi comp | Yes | Usually | No |
Short answer: if you train no-gi BJJ, buy grappling shorts. If you train MMA with striking, fight shorts work too but run looser. Never train in board shorts — the pockets and external ties are a genuine injury risk.
How to Choose No-Gi BJJ Shorts
Four things decide whether a pair lasts a season or three weeks.
Inseam Length
Shorter inseams give maximum hip freedom and suit guard players who invert. Longer inseams protect the thigh during knee-cut passing and on abrasive mats.
Every pair in this collection runs a 6.5 inch inseam — short enough to stay clear of the knee during knee slides and step-outs, long enough to give real thigh coverage against mat friction. It is the middle ground most grapplers settle on, so you are not choosing between length and mobility.
Fabric Weight
Fabric weight is measured in GSM — grams per square metre. Heavier fabric lasts longer but carries more heat. Lighter fabric moves better in hot rooms but shows wear sooner.
Our shorts are made from 200 GSM micro stretch fabric, with a lighter 120 GSM option also available. Two hundred is the practical middle ground for athletes training several times a week.
Waist Closure
This is where cheap shorts fail first. The waist takes constant pulling every time someone posts on your hip or drives into you. Look for a closure that stays fastened without needing a re-tie between rounds — and no external drawstring for a partner to grab.
Stretch and Gusset
The gusset is the panel between the legs. It is what allows a wide base without the seam splitting, and it is the first place a badly built pair gives out.
Our shorts use 100% polyester micro stretch fabric with a stretch gusset — enough give for a full penetration step, without the fabric stretching out permanently after a month of training.
What Size Men's Grappling Shorts Should You Buy?
Order to your normal waist measurement. Grappling shorts are cut close by design — that is the point — but they should never restrict a deep shot or a high guard.
If you are between two sizes, size up. A pair that is slightly loose at the waist is a minor annoyance. A pair that binds at the hip costs you the position.
Sizes run 28 through 42. Where a specific style in our range fits differently, it is stated on that product page.
Are BJJ Shorts Legal for No-Gi Competition?
Generally yes, but rulesets vary by organisation. Most no-gi competitions require:
- No pockets
- No zips, buttons or exposed metal
- No external drawstrings
- Shorts that finish above the knee
Our grappling shorts are built to those standards. Always check your specific event's current uniform rules before competing — rulesets change year to year.
