Women's BJJ Gis — Jiu Jitsu Gis on a Women's Size Chart
A women's BJJ gi is a jiu jitsu uniform cut on a women's size chart, so the sleeves, jacket length and pants are scaled to women's proportions instead of simply shrinking a men's pattern. Every DAAN women's gi comes in sizes W0 to W4, with Husky and Long fits in W1–W3, so you can match both your height and your build.
Our womens jiu jitsu gis are 100% cotton pearl weave jackets in three weights — 300, 350 and 380 GSM — priced from $105 to $145. You can choose IBJJF legal white, royal blue or black for competition, or train in purple, red, burgundy, brown or sand.
If you are buying your first gi, the short version is: order by height, pick white or black, and choose 300 or 350 GSM. The rest of this page explains why, so you can buy once and get it right.

What Is Different About a Women's BJJ Gi?
Short answer: the size chart. A women's gi is patterned for women's height-to-weight ratios, so it fits closer at the shoulders and runs shorter in the sleeve and leg than the same-numbered men's size.
Most women who start in a men's gi end up rolling the sleeves and cuffing the pants. That is not just untidy. Loose sleeves are an easy grip for your partner, and pants that bunch at the ankle catch your own feet when you shrimp or recover guard.
Men's gis are sized A0 to A5 and assume a broader frame at a given height. Women's gis use a separate W scale. A woman who is 5'5" usually lands around a W2, while a men's A1 in the same height range often fits wide through the shoulders and long through the arms.
The fabric, the stitching and the rules are the same. The IBJJF applies one uniform standard to every competitor, so a women's gi still has to meet the same lapel, collar, color and sleeve-length checks at inspection.
Women's BJJ Gi Size Chart and How to Choose Your Size
Short answer: size by height first, then weight. If you fall between two sizes, take the smaller one, because cotton relaxes a little with wear.
| Size | Typical height | Typical weight |
|---|---|---|
| W0 | 4'10" – 5'1" | 90 – 110 lb |
| W1 | 5'1" – 5'4" | 100 – 125 lb |
| W2 | 5'4" – 5'7" | 120 – 145 lb |
| W3 | 5'7" – 5'10" | 140 – 170 lb |
| W4 | 5'9" – 6'0" | 165 – 195 lb |
These are typical ranges for women's gi sizing. Always check the size chart on the product page before you order.
When to choose Husky or Long
- Husky (W1H–W3H): your height matches the size, but the jacket feels tight across the chest, shoulders or hips. Husky adds width without adding length.
- Long (W1L–W3L): you are tall and slim for your weight. Long adds sleeve and leg length without adding width.
- Standard: everyone else. Most women fit a standard size.
Do not size up to be safe. An oversized gi gives your partner extra fabric to grip, and the extra sleeve and leg length bunches up exactly where you need freedom to move.
300 vs 350 vs 380 GSM: Which Gi Weight Is Right for You?
Short answer: 350 GSM suits most women for everyday training. Pick 300 GSM if your gym runs hot or you train back-to-back classes, and 380 GSM if you compete and want a stiffer collar.
GSM means grams per square meter. It tells you how heavy and dense the jacket fabric is.
| Weight | Feel on the mat | Best for | Drying time (hung indoors) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 300 GSM | Light, breathable, softer collar | Hot rooms, travel, beginners, twice-a-day training | About 6–12 hours |
| 350 GSM | Balanced structure without excess heat | Three to five sessions a week | About 10–18 hours |
| 380 GSM | Rigid, competition-grade collar and lapel | Tournaments, grip fighting, pressure passing | About 12–24 hours |

Which Women's Gi Colors Are IBJJF Legal?
Short answer: white, royal blue and black. The jacket, pants and collar must all be the same color. Every other color is for training and local events.
| Color | IBJJF competition | Good choice if you… |
|---|---|---|
| White | Legal | are buying your first gi — every gym and every tournament accepts it |
| Black | Legal | want a competition gi that hides mat wear |
| Royal blue | Legal | want to stand out while staying tournament legal |
| Purple, red, burgundy, brown, sand | Not legal | already own a legal gi and want a training gi that is yours |
Royal blue is not the same as navy. Navy is treated as a different color and fails inspection. See our women's IBJJF legal gis if you are preparing for a federation event.
The Best Women's BJJ Gi for Your Situation
There is no single best gi for women. There is a best gi for how you train.
Your first gi
Choose white in 300 or 350 GSM. White is accepted everywhere and lighter fabric is easier to live with in your first sweaty months. The Axiom White women's gi is a 300 GSM starting point.
Competing this season
Go heavier and legal. The Obsidian Black women's gi uses our heaviest 380 GSM jacket with 290 GSM pants, built for a collar that holds up to grip fighting.
You want color but still compete
Royal blue is your only legal color option. Look at the Vanguard Blue women's gi.
You want a gi nobody else at your gym has
Our purple BJJ gi and red BJJ gi are training colors built on the same cotton pearl weave as the rest of the range. They make a strong second gi once you own a legal one.
What to Wear Under Your Gi
Under IBJJF rules, women must wear a rash guard or elastic athletic top under the gi jacket in competition. Most academies expect the same in class.
A fitted women's rash guard stays put when the lapel opens and keeps friction off your skin. For lighter coverage, pair a sports bra with compression leggings under the pants.
How to Wash a BJJ Gi Without Shrinking It
Short answer: wash cold, hang dry, never use a dryer.
- Wash the same day you train. A damp gi left in a bag overnight grows bacteria and odor.
- Use cold water, inside out. Heat is what shrinks cotton.
- Hang dry out of direct sun. One hot dryer cycle can take a full size off a gi.
- Wash colored gis separately for the first three washes so excess dye does not transfer.
- Use white vinegar instead of bleach on a white gi. Bleach weakens cotton and turns it yellow over time.
Cared for this way, a cotton gi lasts years of regular training.

Women's BJJ Gi FAQs
What is the difference between a women's and a men's BJJ gi?
A women's gi uses a women's size chart (W0–W4), so it is proportioned for women's height and build. Compared with a men's gi of similar size, it is usually narrower at the shoulders and shorter in the sleeves and pants. Fabric and IBJJF rules are the same.
What size BJJ gi should a woman get?
Choose by height first, then weight. Most women between 5'4" and 5'7" wear a W2. If you are broad for your height, choose Husky. If you are tall and slim, choose Long. Between two sizes, take the smaller one.
Can women wear a men's BJJ gi?
Yes, and many do, but it usually means rolling the sleeves and pants. A women's gi fits closer, which gives training partners less loose fabric to grip and stops the sleeves and pants from bunching.
Which women's gi colors are IBJJF legal?
White, royal blue and black. The jacket, pants and collar must all be one color. Purple, red, burgundy, brown, sand and navy are not allowed in IBJJF events.
What GSM is best for a women's BJJ gi?
350 GSM is the best all-round weight for regular training. 300 GSM is better for hot gyms, travel and beginners. 380 GSM suits competitors who want a stiff, hard-to-grip collar.
How much does a women's BJJ gi cost?
DAAN women's gis cost $105 to $145. A quality cotton gi from most brands falls between $100 and $200, and anything much cheaper usually uses thin single-weave fabric that tears within months.
Will my BJJ gi shrink?
A cotton gi shrinks mainly from heat. Wash it cold and hang it to dry and it will keep its size. A hot tumble dryer is the most common reason a gi shrinks a full size.
What do women wear under a BJJ gi?
A rash guard or fitted athletic top. The IBJJF requires women to wear one under the jacket in competition, and most gyms expect it in class too.
