Men's Lightweight BJJ Gis — Ultralight Gis for Hot Rooms and Travel
Some gis feel like wearing a wet duvet by the third round. If you train in a warm gym, travel for seminars or cut weight for tournaments, a heavy gi works against you.
A lightweight BJJ gi swaps thick fabric for a lighter pearl weave jacket and ripstop pants. You carry less, soak up less sweat and dry faster. The DAAN Ultralight range does this at 300 GSM, in six colors: grey, tan, green, ocean blue, sky blue and navy blue.
Straight answer: a lightweight BJJ gi is usually 250–400 GSM, against 450–550 GSM for a traditional heavy gi. The DAAN Ultralight has a 300 GSM pearl weave jacket and 260 GSM ripstop pants, costs $130 and comes in sizes A0–A5 plus Husky and Long. None of the six colors is IBJJF-legal, so these are training gis.

What Makes a BJJ Gi "Lightweight"?
The weight of a gi is measured in GSM, or grams per square meter of fabric. There is no official standard, but most brands and reviewers treat 350 GSM and under as lightweight.
| Category | Jacket GSM | Feel on the mat | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lightweight | 250–350 | Breathable, quick drying, easy to carry | Hot rooms, travel, weight cuts, second gi |
| Standard | 380–450 | Firm, holds shape under pressure | Daily training and competition |
| Heavy | 450–550 | Stiff, hot, slow to dry | Traditional gi feel, grip-fighting purists |
The DAAN Ultralight is a 300 GSM jacket with 260 GSM ripstop pants, so it sits in the middle of the lightweight band: light enough to stay cool, solid enough to feel like a real gi.
Who Should Buy a Lightweight BJJ Gi?
- Anyone training in a hot room. Less fabric means less trapped heat and a gi that is not soaked through by round two.
- Travelers. A light gi packs smaller and dries faster between seminars, camps and open mats.
- Competitors managing weight. Most competitors are weighed in their gi, so a lighter jacket and pants take weight off the scale.
- Grapplers who rotate gis. A second gi lets each one dry fully and last longer.
- Beginners. A lighter gi is comfortable from the first class and easy to wash and dry.
Lightweight vs Heavyweight: The Honest Trade-Offs
A lighter weave breathes better and dries faster, but it is not the toughest gi you can buy. Thin fabric wears faster than a thick pearl weave if it is washed hot or dried on high heat.
Grip is a matter of taste. Some grapplers like a stiff, heavy lapel to grip; others prefer lighter fabric that gives an opponent less to hold. If you train five days a week and want maximum toughness, keep a heavier gi as your daily driver and use the Ultralight for hot days and travel.
Choose Your Ultralight Gi Color
All six gis share the same 300 GSM jacket, 260 GSM ripstop pants, sizing and $130 price. The only difference is color.
| Gi | The look | Pick it if |
|---|---|---|
| Grey Ultralight | Steel grey, plain, one small shoulder mark | You want a quiet, everyday training gi |
| Tan Ultralight | Soft sand tone | You want to stand out from white, blue and black |
| Green Ultralight | Muted sage green | You want color without neon |
| Ocean Blue Ultralight | Bright, vivid blue | You like blue but want something livelier than royal |
| Sky Blue Ultralight | Light blue with dark blue shoulder marks | You want the brightest, coolest-looking gi |
| Navy Blue Ultralight | Deep navy with pale blue shoulder marks | You want a dark, formal-looking gi |
IBJJF Colors: Can You Compete in an Ultralight Gi?
The IBJJF permits white, royal blue and black gis. None of the six Ultralight colors is on that list, so treat them as training and local-event gis, and always check the rules of the tournament you are entering.
| Color | IBJJF legal? | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Grey | No. Not an IBJJF color | Training, open mats, local events |
| Tan | No. Not an IBJJF color | Training, open mats, local events |
| Green | No. Not an IBJJF color | Training, open mats, local events |
| Ocean Blue | No. Not the royal blue the IBJJF permits | Training, open mats, local events |
| Sky Blue | No. Not the royal blue the IBJJF permits | Training, open mats, local events |
| Navy Blue | No. Not the royal blue the IBJJF permits | Training, open mats, local events |

BJJ Gi Sizes: A0 to A5, Plus Husky and Long
BJJ gis use A-sizing, not S/M/L. The A number is set by height first, then weight.
| Size | Height | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| A0 | 5'2" – 5'5" | 110 – 140 lbs |
| A1 | 5'5" – 5'8" | 130 – 155 lbs |
| A2 | 5'8" – 5'11" | 155 – 185 lbs |
| A3 | 5'11" – 6'2" | 185 – 210 lbs |
| A4 | 6'2" – 6'4" | 210 – 235 lbs |
| A5 | 6'4" – 6'6" | 235 – 265 lbs |
Husky sizes (A1H, A2H, A3H) — same height as the standard size, cut wider through the chest and waist. For stockier builds and heavier weight classes.
Long sizes (A1L, A2L, A3L) — same width, longer in the sleeve and leg. For tall, lean builds where a standard A2 leaves the wrists and ankles exposed.
Between two sizes? Size down. Cotton relaxes with wear, and IBJJF measures sleeves and pants for being too short, never too long.
Buying for a training partner instead? The same sizing logic applies across our women's BJJ gis, which run on their own F-size chart.

Lightweight BJJ Gi FAQs
What is a lightweight BJJ gi?
A lightweight BJJ gi uses thinner fabric than a traditional gi, usually 250–400 GSM against 450–550 GSM for a heavy one. The lighter weave breathes better, weighs less in your bag and dries faster, which is why it is popular for hot rooms, travel and weight cuts. The trade-off is a little less durability than a thick pearl weave.
How light is the DAAN Ultralight gi?
The DAAN Ultralight jacket is a 300 GSM 100% cotton pearl weave and the pants are 260 GSM cotton ripstop. That puts it at the lighter end of the DAAN range, where our heaviest competition builds reach 380 GSM.
Is a lightweight gi IBJJF legal?
It can be, depending on color and measurements. The IBJJF sets rules for color (white, royal blue or black), lapel, collar and sleeve measurements, and it does not set a minimum fabric weight. None of the six DAAN Ultralight colors is on the federation color list, so they are training gis. For federation events see our IBJJF-legal gis.
Will a lightweight gi help me make weight?
Yes, a little. Competitors are typically weighed in their gi, so a lighter jacket and pants take weight off the scale before you cut anything else. It will not replace a proper weight plan, but it removes unnecessary ounces.
Are lightweight gis less durable than heavy gis?
A lighter weave trades some durability for breathability. With cold washes and hang drying, a lightweight gi holds up well for regular classes. If you train hard every day, many grapplers keep a heavier gi as their daily driver and use a lightweight gi for hot rooms, travel and as a rotation gi.
What is the best lightweight BJJ gi for hot weather?
Look for a pearl weave jacket at 350 GSM or lighter, ripstop pants and cotton fabric that dries quickly. The DAAN Ultralight is built around that formula at $130, in six colors. Wash it cold and hang it to dry so it stays light and holds its shape.
What size lightweight BJJ gi should I order?
Size by height first, then weight, using the A-size chart above. Choose Husky if you are broad through the chest and shoulders, or Long if you are tall and lean. If you fall between sizes, take the smaller one, because cotton relaxes with wear.
Which Ultralight color should I buy?
Pick grey, tan or green for a muted, everyday look, ocean blue or sky blue for a brighter gi, and navy blue for a darker, formal look. All six use the same 300 GSM jacket and 260 GSM pants, so the choice is about color and how you plan to use the gi.
