Men's BJJ Gis — Jiu Jitsu Gis Built for Real Mat Time
Most jiu jitsu gis are sold on a photo and a price. Then the first hard round tells you the truth — the collar folds, the sleeves ride up, the pants soak through and stay wet.
A BJJ gi is training equipment before it is clothing. It has to hold a grip, survive a wash cycle three times a week, and still pass a referee's tape measure on competition day.
Every men's BJJ gi below is built to one of three fabric weights, cut to IBJJF measurements, and available in twelve sizes including Husky and Long fits that most brands skip. Prices run $105 to $130.
What Is a BJJ Gi?
A BJJ gi is the cotton uniform worn in gi jiu jitsu. It has three parts: a reinforced jacket, drawstring pants, and a rank belt.
The jacket is the piece that matters most. In Brazilian jiu jitsu you grip the fabric — collar, sleeve, lapel — so the weave has to stay rigid enough to hold a grip without becoming so stiff that your opponent cannot take one. The IBJJF rulebook states the fabric "should not be so thick or hard as to impede an opponent from gripping it."
That is why pearl weave has become the standard. It gives structure at a manageable weight, and it does not stretch out after the first month.
Belts are sold separately. You can find ours in the BJJ belts range.
Choose Your Gi by Fabric Weight
Gi weight is measured in GSM — grams per square meter. It is the single number that changes how a gi feels on the mat. Higher GSM means more structure and more durability. Lower GSM means less heat and a faster dry.
| Weight | Feel on the mat | Best for | DAAN range |
|---|---|---|---|
| 380 GSM pearl weave | Firm, holds shape under pressure | Competition, heavy training, top-game players | Competition tier — $115 to $130 |
| 350 GSM pearl weave | Balanced structure and comfort | Three to five sessions a week, all-round use | Training tier — $105 to $130 |
| 300 GSM pearl weave | Light, breathable, dries fast | Hot gyms, summer training, two-a-days, travel | Lightweight tier — $115 to $130 |
All pants are cotton ripstop — 290 GSM on competition gis, 280 GSM on training gis, 260 GSM on lightweight gis. Ripstop resists the tears that open up when a knee slides across the mat.
Straight answer: if you train three or more times a week and compete, buy 380 GSM. If you train in a hot room or wash your gi daily, buy 300 GSM. If you are not sure, 350 GSM is the safe middle.
Training in a hot gym year-round? The full lightweight BJJ gi range sits at 300 GSM.
IBJJF Legal Colors: What You Can Actually Compete In
This is where most gi buyers get caught out. A gi can be excellent and still be turned away at the inspection table.
The IBJJF permits three colors only: white, royal blue and black. The rule is exact:
"GIs must be of uniform color. The following colors are permissible: white, royal blue or black. Gis with tops and pants of different colors are not permitted; nor are GIs with a collar that is a different color than the rest of the top."
Two things that catch people out:
- Navy is not royal blue. It fails inspection.
- Top and pants must match. A black jacket with white pants is not legal, even if both colors are on the list.
So the collection splits cleanly:
| Category | Colors | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Competition legal | White, Black, Royal Blue | IBJJF tournaments and open mats |
| Training only | Grey, Navy, Olive, Teal, Khaki, Sand | Daily training, local comps that allow color |
If you compete under IBJJF rules, start with the IBJJF legal gis range. Everything in it meets the color rule, the 1.3 cm lapel thickness limit, the 5 cm collar width limit and the sleeve and pant length measurements.
Colored gis are still worth owning. Most gyms have no color rule for training, and a second gi in a color you like is how you stop washing the same white one every night.
BJJ Gi Sizes: A0 to A5, Plus Husky and Long
BJJ gis use A-sizing, not S/M/L. The A number is set by height first, then weight.
| Size | Height | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| A0 | 5'2" – 5'5" | 110 – 140 lbs |
| A1 | 5'5" – 5'8" | 130 – 155 lbs |
| A2 | 5'8" – 5'11" | 155 – 185 lbs |
| A3 | 5'11" – 6'2" | 185 – 210 lbs |
| A4 | 6'2" – 6'4" | 210 – 235 lbs |
| A5 | 6'4" – 6'6" | 235 – 265 lbs |
Husky sizes (A1H, A2H, A3H) — same height as the standard size, cut wider through the chest and waist. For stockier builds and heavier weight classes.
Long sizes (A1L, A2L, A3L) — same width, longer in the sleeve and leg. For tall, lean builds where a standard A2 leaves the wrists and ankles exposed.
Between two sizes? Size down. Cotton relaxes with wear, and IBJJF measures sleeves and pants for being too short, never too long.
Buying for a training partner instead? The same sizing logic applies across our women's BJJ gis, which run on their own F-size chart.
How to Pick the Best BJJ Gi for Where You Are Right Now
If you are a beginner. Buy white, 300 or 350 GSM, one gi to start. White is legal everywhere, it shows you when it actually needs washing, and most gyms expect it for your first months. Do not spend $200 before you know you are staying.
If you train four or more times a week. You need two gis minimum. A cotton gi takes 12 to 24 hours to dry properly and training in a damp gi is how skin infections start. Two 350 GSM gis will outlast one expensive one.
If you compete. 380 GSM, white or black, and check your sleeve length before the event rather than at the inspection table. Pack a second legal gi if the tournament runs gi and no-gi on the same day.
If your gym is hot. 300 GSM. The difference between 380 and 300 GSM in a room with no air conditioning is not subtle.
If you are training no-gi too. You will want rash guards and grappling shorts as well. Gi pants and a t-shirt are not no-gi legal under IBJJF rules.

Looking After Your Gi
Cotton gis shrink in heat. That is the whole rule.
- Wash cold, 30°C or below, inside out
- Hang dry. Never tumble dry. One hot cycle can take a full size off a gi
- Wash after every session. Not the next morning — that night
- Vinegar, not bleach. Half a cup of white vinegar in the wash kills odor without stripping the fibers
- Wash colors separately for the first three washes
A gi washed this way lasts three to four years of regular training. A gi tumble dried twice may not last three months.
